Butterfly orchid

ENG This is my phalaenopsis orchid which I got from my mother. The flowers have lasted since October, two and half months that is! What a nice surprise, I thought it would die in no time. I water it once a week, around six pm every sunday evening by bathing it in a tub for 40 minutes. Before bathing, I let the water rest and breathe for some hours, sometimes over night even. That’s how the water becomes the right temperature and has enough oxygen. I haven’t given any fertilizer to the plant yet since it is the darkest time of the year and it shouldn’t be doing much growing now. The orchid sits on a drawer close to a window facing west and I think that there is a light draft there most of the time. Taking care of orchids seems to be quite easy and care-free! Or maybe my darling is just a survivor.

FIN Sain tämän perhoskämmekän äidiltäni kaksi ja puoli kuukautta sitten ja sen kukat ovat pysyneet kauniina siitä lähtien – suureksi yllätyksekseni! Kastelen kukkaa upottamalla sen sisäruukussaan kerran viikossa – yleensä sunnuntai-iltaisin – ämpärilliseen vettä, kuitenkin niin, että lehtien tyvet jäävät veden pinnalle. Lasken veden ämpäriin mahdollisimman kylmänä ja annan lämmetä huoneenlämpöiseksi vähintään pari tuntia, joskus jopa yön yli. Kai siihen jotain happeakin tulee. Kylvetys kestää noin 40 minuutista tuntiin fiilikseni ja muistini mukaan. En ole vielä lannoittanut orkideaa ollenkaan, lannoitetta tarvitaan vasta kasvukaudella. Perhoskämmekkä asustelee lipastoni päällä, lähellä länsi-ikkunaa.
